[Poem] Daydream's Arrears

I love the daze
After too many glasses;
Masking the days,
As they zap pass.

Lately the nights
And days merge into one;
I set my sights
On the bottle of wine.

But answers elude me;
Corners of nowhere.

The charmed life,
The smoke and mirrors;
Melting into accursed base,
My daydream's arrears.

Lunch at Teng Bespoke Vegetarian Restaurant @ Bugis

91 Bencoolen Street, #01-50 Sunshine Plaza, Singapore 189652
Tel: 6337 7050

We chanced upon Teng Bespoke Vegetarian Restaurant not realising it was a vegetarian at first, because the Japanese food listed on the menu looked so enticing - bento sets, green tea soba in soup, grilled Yakitori and sashimi items, etc. The Host informed us that this was a vegetarian restaurant before leading us to the table, and we were excited (at least my lunch companions were) to try such interesting-looking vegetarian food.

You see, to many people, the thought of "vegetarian food" typically brings to mind greasy, deep-fried mock meat or salads with unappetising ingredients. Not anymore, though, because vegetarian restaurants have very interesting dishes to rival their non-vegetarian competitors, and Teng Bespoke is one such restaurant, creating their dishes based on Japanese cuisine. To be more specific, Teng Bespoke is your good alternative to Shojin ryori (Zen Buddhist temples), tailoring their interior decor and menu to this concept.

The appetiser provided by the restaurant is a bowl of Crispy Tapioca Crisps, served with sesame dip. We enjoyed this appetiser very much as it was lovely in the mouth, with its subtle dash of sweetness. We also ordered a pot of Hot Green Tea to go along with the meal.

We stared with Salmon Sashimi (SGD$9.00), served with wasabi for that authentic feel. The slices of  sashimi were springy in texture, oddly with the subtle sweet "fishy" taste one associates with eating real salmon sashimi.

Then there was the Japanese Sweet Potato, roasted lightly for it to retain its sweetness, moisture and softness. I am not a sweet potato fan, but most of my lunch companions enjoyed this item the most.

Teriyaki Chicken on Skewer (SGD$7.00) had what was being described by one of my companions as "tastes like rope".  I tried the charred piece at the end which was crispy with a smokey overture that I found was, quite good.

Then there was Potato Salad, served cold, with mayonnaise and lettuce.

Moving on, Avocado Maki, comprising mock ebi (shrimp), avocado, and nori. The avocado and rice were a little too mushy in my opinion, but taste-wise, was quite good.

Green Tea Soba Noodle Soup was was made up of flavourful broth but noodle and soup held no hint of green tea at all. Other ingredients included Tau Pok (dried beancurd) and mushrooms.

Cold Buckwheat Soba was served chilled, on a bed of ice. Tiny pieces of deep-fried ginger gave it a lovely flavor and crispiness. I tried it without the dipping sauce on the side, and thought it tasted good enough.

Finally, Mushroom and Tofu Hotpot (SGD$14.00) - a rather huge personal hotspot composed of a delicious, earthly soup filled with 6 silky tofu cubes, enoki mushrooms, shitake mushroom, one other type of mushroom, and 2 types of vegetables. I enjoyed this healthy dish immensely.

Overall verdict of dining experience here at Teng Bespoke Vegetarian Restaurant? Food-wise, there were hits and misses. Service could be improved upon, such as crew staff being more attentive.

Opening Ceremony of The Comb Hair Studio @ Boat Quay

13 Lorong Telok, Boat Quay, Singapore 049026
Tel: 6535 3138

My last experience with The Comb Hair Studio at Raffles Place (review here) was an excellent one, and hence I am delighted to be invited for the grand opening of their new outlet at Boat Quay.

They provide a wide range of hair services including trim and cut, hair styling, hair treatment etc . This outlet may not be in a huge unit, but they manage to make the interior very spacious and comfortable.

Pastries and food items were provided. The desserts were very lovely, especially the mini Apple Crumble Tartlets and Earl Grey Panna Cotta. I also liked the Pasta and Calamari.

I had a session of Trim and Treatment by their talented Stylists. The head massage that I enjoyed during the hairwash was very rejuvenating and comfortable , thoroughly pressing and kneading at different spots of my head to soothe. I left the place feeling refreshed and pretty.

Thank you The Comb Hair Studio and Rachael for the warm invite as well as wonderful hair treatment experience. Congratulations again on the new outlet; may business take off beautifully!

ClearSK 10th Anniversary Celebration Party @ Ion Sky Level 55

2 Orchard Turn, Level 56, Ion Orchard, Singapore 238801
Tel: 6100 1221
Website: http://www.clearskgroup.com

ClearSK celebrated its 10th anniversary over the weekend, celebrated its many milestones and I was honoured to be one of the attendees.

To share a little on them, ClearSK Aesthetics is founded by Dr. Shiau Ee Leng and it's first humbling beginning was a cosy outlet located at Toa Payoh. That was year 2008, but the beauty parlour put up a tough fight against recession, and today it boosts of multiple outlets in Singapore and overseas. Now they also provide more services, targeting skin, slimming and hair. Congratulations Dr. Shiau and team!

Various stations were set up around the area where one could get their Skin Analysis done, or enjoy trial Lifting treatments, or check out the SkinCeuticals products on sale. Their beauty therapists were there to give advice on treatments available to suit each individual's unique needs.

Brand ambassadors include the gorgeous artiste Jeanette Aw and violinist Yap Shu Mei. The latter also treated us to a fabulous performance of her talent.

Besides reviews of facial treatments by the ambassadors and a panel discussion between the 3 power women, the celebration commenced with cake-cutting and champagne toasts.

Buffet dinner of Thai cuisine (about 10 dishes at least) and Rosa Wine (or Champagne, if you prefer), as well as slices of cake were served.

I was y to you psyched to take a couple of pictures with Jeanette right here against the darkening skyline. Happy birthday in advance babe!

Oh and did I mention the gorgeous Goody-bag duffel-style, containing facial treatment vouchers, products vouchers and of course, SkinCeuticals samples? I can't wait to try everything in there.

Lucky draw with attractive prizes concluded the 4-hour event. All in all, it was an enriching, fun-filled and beautiful event where I made new friends too. Congratulations again ClearSK Aesthetics - may you have many more years and breakthroughs to come!

Dinner at Lai Lai Taiwan Casual Dining @ City Square Mall [Revisit]

180 Kitchener Road #03-39 / 40 City Square Mall, Singapore 208539
Tel: 6509 5626

Some old favourites are worth revisiting time and again, for me, Lai Lai Taiwan Casual Dining (review here) is one such restaurant. I love their Lu Rou Fan (means "braised pork rice"), which I enjoy tremendously because of the myriad ingredients of good tender braised meat, braised egg, soft braised peanuts etc.  I secretly prefer it to the Lu Rou Fan I had in Taiwan, save for them not using pearl rice.

Anyway, this was a revisit to try other items, though it was very tempting for me to order my signature favourite again.

Instead of Lu Rou Fan, I ordered Lu Rou Mian aka Braised Pork Meat Noodles (SGD$9.90) this time round. The ingredients were the same actually - tender braised mat, braised egg, and pickled vegetables. The differences were meat balls and usage of a white handmade flat noodle which was very springy and delicious. I loved this immensely, and was glad I ordered this dish to try too.

The Stew Beef Egg Rice (SGD$9.90) was pretty good too, after all, Lai Lai Taiwan Casual Dining proclaims their beef items to be their specialty, recipes from a Taiwan hotel famous for beef noodles. Beef was tender and moistened, and flavour was good.

We added a Cong Jua Bing (SGD$6.50) aka Onion Biscuit, comprising onion and egg in a soft flour shell with crispy edges. One could choose to add sesame or pork floss to it.

Overall,  we enjoyed our dining experience here very much once again. Though it saddens me that this is the only outlet left in Singapore (used to have 2 more, in Jurong Point and Liang Seah Street too), I hope it continues to be around so I get to enjoy good Taiwanese-style fare in the comfort of my own country.
