Lunch at Pool Grill @ Marriott [Revisit]

320 Orchard Road, Level 5, Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, Singapore 238865
Tel: 6831 4605  6735 5800

Had an enjoyable session at Pool Grill same time this year (review here), so decided to head back with *Pamela, the sweetheart with exact same birthday as me.

Weather was hot and humid, even a little stifling, but the large overhead fans kept the beautiful poolside ambience bearable. We had a table by the pool, and as usual the service crew was professional, polite and rather immaculate.

Glasses of Rose Wine (SGD$18.00) started the meal; I took mine gingerly over Bread (with sunflower seeds and grains) served with dips of olive oil, butter and crushed nuts.

The Spaghetti (SGD$28.00), as it is simply called was a lovely composition of pasta tossed with chilli, garlic, clams and sea urchin. I thought it was a rather refreshing touch because I usually get white wine sauce with clams in pasta, but this was done aglio olio style, utterly tasty.

Pan-fried Cod Fish (SGD$38.00) was sweet-fleshed and flakey, enhanced with red wine reduction. I also enjoyed the crispy cauliflower confit very much, adding bite to the dish.

Overall we enjoyed the dining experience here at Pool Grill tremendously, chatting while watching action over the pretty pool.

Dinner at TungLok Signatures @ Changi City Point

5 Changi Business Park Central 1, #01-26 / 27 Changi City Point, Singapore 486038
Tel: 6636 0606

After the 2 visits at TungLok Teahouse (review here), I decided it was time to visit TungLok Signature again, so I rounded the family up for a dinner gathering at the Changi City outlet (most of them reside in the East).

Menu items were good enough but not too extensive; seemingly conventional Chinese fare with a modern fusion twist. Interior decor was lavish with indoor and outdoor (not like alfresco-style, but along the mall's passageways) seating available. Service crew was professional and polite enough.

We were a little disappointed as we were looking forward to having Crab (even though their flavors only comprise White Pepper, Curry or Chilli)- but there was no more crab for the evening (it was only 7.30pm). They served some Prawn Crackers (SGD$3.00) for us to nibble on while we pondered over the menus.

The meal began with Deep-fried Fish Skin with rich Salted Egg sauce (SGD$10.00) - very delectable and addictive actually, but the sauce was decadent so around 2 - 3 pieces each, was enough, without feeling too overwhelmed.

Next up, Wasabi Shrimp Balls (SGD$) for medium - crispy, deep-fried battered shrimp balls slathered with creamy wasabi sauce. Not too spicy, just the right amount of kick, and the bouncy texture of fresh shrimps was very enjoyable.

We also had the Spinach with 3 Eggs dish (SGD$) - fresh greens stir-fried to the right doneness mixed with century eggs, salted egg and fresh chicken eggs.

Then we had Garoupa with Lily Bulbs (SGD$38.00) - sweet-fleshed, flaky garoupa dish slices stir-fried with crunchy lily bulbs and capsicum for extra flavours.

Following that, we had the Roast Platter (SGD$57.00 for medium) , comprising roast chicken, BBQ pork (char siew) and crispy pork belly. The platter is fixed so we could not choose our own choice of meat, such as Irish duck. It was quite good overall, especially the crispy pork belly which was gone within seconds; we just found the chicken and char siew a little salty.

Moving on, Curry Prawns served with 6 fried buns (SGD$), an interesting twist to traditional Chinese fare. The gravy was spicy and creamy; I liked it. Not sure if the prawns were soaked too long in the gravy, but there wasnt the springy-ness we anticipated.

Prawns in Tomato Sauce (SGD$) was next; this batch of fleshy prawns had the springy fresh texture, and tomato enhanced its natural sweet flavor.

After that, we tried the Pork Shank (SGD$18.00) - very huge portion of tender braised meat with melty skin.

Final mains - the Seafood Fried Rice wrapped in Lotus Leaf (SGD$). We were expecting traditional zi-char style fried rice with the wok's breath ("wok-hei"). There was no wok's breath, though elements like seafood and lotus leaf were intact. The layer of baked cheese and addition of ham made gave the fried rice a Macau-style baked rice feel, and the entire dish was very salty. Each of us had a couple spoonfuls and packed this back so we could redo the dish.

For desserts, the Avocado Cream with Purple Rice (SGD$6.00) and a scoop of gelato was lovely and every bite was inviting; refreshing.

Mango Beancurd (SGD$6.00) was smooth and fragrant of mango's aroma but too watery in texture.

Finally, Herbal Jelly with Longan Gelato (SGD$6.00) served well to cool the palate and delight the soul. We loved the bittersweet combination and beautiful blend of lychee taste.

Overall, we rather enjoyed the dinner at Tunglok Signatures; and were especially thankful for their thoughtful decor of the huge tray (with handwritten words of blessings) for our celebratory cake. Note that cake is our own - they provided the tray with words of blessings and decor.

Dessert at The Daily Scoop Cafe @ Sembawang

369 Sembawang Road #01-05 Sembawang Cottage, Singapore 758382
Tel: 6754 1233

The Daily Scoop started in 2004 at Sunset Way, and now has 4 outlets across Singapore. Their ice-cream flavours are freshly-created and there are more than 45 fun flavours to choose from.

The cafe has a cheery ambience illustrated by adorable drawings on the walls. Service is polite and the staff are ready to let patrons try any flavours they desire.

Besides ice-cream and freshly-baked ice-cream cones, The Daily Scoop also has other items such as waffles, brownies, crepes and floats.

We shared 2 scoops of Ice-cream (SGD$6.60), namely Yuzu Cheesecake, and Lychee Martini. The former was zesty and creamy; whereas the latter was sweetly tinged with martini's distinctive flavour, very delightful.

Overall, we enjoyed our desserts at this happy cafe and look forward to being back for more ice-cream and or their accompanying pastries.

Outfit of the Day - monochrome patterned blouse over black skirt

Lunch at Sushi Tei Japanese Restaurant @ Jem, Jurong

Over a span of 2 months, *Pris and I dined at Sushi Tei Japanese Restaurant twice together, somehow managing to order the same items during both visits. Anyway, we enjoy the food at Sushi Tei, and service is not too bad.

Zuwai Gani Chawanmushi (SGD$6.90) pleased the palate immensely with tasty zuwai crab sauce on smooth steam egg custard.

The Salmon Enoki Roll (SGD$8.00) was grilled to a deep golden hue and immersed with teriyaki sauce, bringing satisfaction with its bouncy texture and great taste.

Grilled Squid (SGD$9.80) aka Ikata Sugata, was dressed with teriyaki sauce (option of salt in lieu of sauce available). Smokey hints permeated into the springy and chewy squid flesh, making for another great appetiser.

Next, Soft Shell Crab (SGD$12.80) was deep-fried with a crackling exterior unveiling to a gently crunching interior; always one of my favorite dishes at all times.

Moving on to mains, she enjoyed her Chicken Katsu Don (SGD$10.90)- a neat case of crispy chicken cutlet and egg over Japanese rice.

I stuck with my Chirashi Don (SGD$10.80) made up of fresh slices of raw seafood (salmon, tuna, salmon roe, shrimps and squid) over Japanese rice.

We never failed to conclude our meals with Cheese Stick Ice-Cream (SGD$3.80) and letting the creaminess mull over the tongue slowly, melting into a luscious pool of bliss.

There you have it, my review on Sushi Tei and I will be glad to be back again.

Dinner at Canton Paradise @ Katong 112

112 East Coast Road, #B1-15 Katong I12, Singapore 428802
Tel: 6345 8201

Hunting for a place in the East to dine on first day of Lunar New Year, and we were glad that Canton Paradise is open for business. I had just tried Canton Paradise at MBS (review here), so I was looking forward to eating the food here again.

We started with a small Abalone Yu Sheng (SGD$39.80) and the waitress helped to douse the ingredients while reciting words of blessings and well wishes with each item.

Then there were Crystal Prawns with Salted Egg (SGD$29.70 for medium) - huge bouncy prawns battered with luscious salted egg sauce, utterly delicious.

Next, Roast Platter (SGD$36.40) - there wss no duck so we opted for Roast Pork Belly, Char Siew and Black Char Siew - I loved the latter especially much because it was tender and melty.

There was also HPB Chives stir-fried with Mushroom and Garlic (SGD$18.80 for small), also commonly known as Qing Long Vegetables; very crunchy and tasty.

Black Pepper Marbled Beef (SGD$31.20) was served next, mildly spicy flavours over succulent pieces of thinly-sliced beef.

Finally, Stewed Rice Vermicelli with Prawns in XO Sauce (SGD$25.80). It was utterly tasty with spicy overtures and fresh springy prawns.

Another hearty meal under The Paradise Group, another delightful gathering with family!
