Dinner at Happy Cafe at Gaincity Megastore @ Sungei Kadut

71 Sungei Kadut Drive, Level 1, tain City Megastore, Singapore 729577
Number:  None Supplied

Gaincity Megastore, on the outskirts of Choa Chu Kang! - this seemingly "ulu" aka secluded, rural hideaway was where we spent our National Day evening dinner-ing and shopping, combing all 4 levels of electronic appliances and furniture looking for stuff to buy or replace.

Anyway at a friend / neighbour's recommendation, we decided to have dinner at Happy Cafe. Not much of a cafe cafe, if you are expecting funky chairs and nice table decor. It looks like a nice, neat, air-conditioned coffeeshop (sorry, didnt think to take pictures because had not intended to blog about this).

They do have desserts in the refrigerateď shelves serving cheesecake and yuzu cheesecake etc though. Orders and payment are done via a machine mounted at the front, so it was straight-forward. An open kitchen concept gave us views into the chefs preparing our meals, and service crew bring the food to us.

Cuisine-wise, it is largely Asian local food, an assortment of Chinese and Malay food; with a small selection of Western fare. Prices are reasonable and the most expensive dish (steak) was a mere SGD$13.90. We had a Mango Freezy and Soursop Freezy, both drinks at SGD$4.00 each.  Happy Cafe is headed by Executive Chef Ariff and Chef Ash, both with combined culinary experiences of over 30 years.

Mon Beau had Hotplate Chicken Chop (SGD$8.90), comprising large slice of succulent, juicy chicken, side salad and crispy potato wedges. Taste was good too, not too bland nor salty.

The Hotplate New Zealand Steak (SGD$13.90) came sizzling on a hot plate and was served with mashed potato. The slab of medium beef was thick, moist and delicious with robust black pepper sauce draped across the rich red meat.

Next, Claypot Chicken Mushroom Rice (SGD$7.90) - a very large pot of delicacy which surpassed our expectations by a lot. The pieces of chicken were huge and very tender; the rice tinged with smokey aroma and doused with a delicious black soy sauce. Whole shitake mushrooms and chunky salted fish enhanced the flavor further. All of us agreed that this was the best of the night.

My Ayam Panggang Gahru with Rice (SGD$7.90) was tasty as well - gigantic portion of chicken slathered with peanut sauce, accompanied by coconut-flavored white rice. The entire dish was simply bursting with flavours.

Overall, we liked the simple but delicious food here, and appreciated the very generous portions at ridiculously reasonable prices. I would like to return for sure, and bring more family members here for a casual, quick fix during the weekends.
