Managed to persuade the lunch companion aka good friend in singing Karaoke after our Ikoi lunch, in lieu of coffee chillout. Hence, after debates between choosing KBox, PartyWorld and Ten Dollar Club, we decided on KBox.
We were escorted into a spacious room complete with two LCD TVs and mirrored walls, and we attacked the control panel immediately, selecting songs to input to sing.
Generally, I prefer to go Karaoke singing with people I am closer with, and in smaller groups because firstly, we give and take more readily. We fall easily into a pattern of i.e. three songs each, or would not "clash" each other's songs without consent. Also, it feels more comfortable and I am not fazed by how I sound or look when singing.
With larger groups, I usually go strictly for the mingling and bonding, or networking. Sometimes one may feel somewhat self-conscious when singing in front of many people, especially if it is people we do not know well. Also, when we meet some mike-hoggers, it can be rather annoying because they would give free concerts without a care that others have not yet sung any song yet. Then there are also the types that tag along our songs (not duets, note) and spoil the songs when they go tone-deaf / off-key. Lastly, some people tend to act coy or shy in large groups, refusing to choose their own songs and dislike the songs we've picked for them, so we end up looking like the "mike-hoggers" instead. Either way, it does not bide well.
I enjoy Karaoke singing because:-
(i) I find it a good source of release to vent and bellow my lungs out when I am stressed, sad or down;
(ii) Music has the power to heal, and songs / music bring back good memories, transporting me to times and places depicting different periods of my life, or exotic places I can only see in my mind's eyes'
(iii) I can discover / learn of new or old songs that I would not have known of otherwise, but through friends singing these songs, I find out there are hidden gems of songs unknownst to me; and
(iv) It is a fun pastime
One day, I shall have my own Karaoke room at home, like my ex-boss with his KTV room in his three-storey terrace house. This so cool, so lovely, to be able to sing anytime in the comfort of one's own home. That way, I do not have to spend money or time going to KTV lounges whenever I feel the urge to sing.
Singing does definitely has its own therapeutic properties, a different kind of enjoyment from merely listening to good songs.
