Food Hunting in Johor Bahru @ Malaysia

SEVEN OAKS BAKERY CAFE
134 Jalan Serampang, Taman Tebrau Jaya, 80400 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Tel: +601 133079863

A very beautiful three-storey bakery cafe standing out in its white and gold magnificence at Johor Bahru itself, Seven Oaks Bakery Cafe is sure eye-catching. The interior is equally elegant with vintage floral decor and lots of sweet-faced teddy bears. Their most beautiful creations are of course, the many different types of Cakes, such as Chocolate Praline, Raspberry Mascarpone, Mango Charlotte, Lemon Cheeseecake, Rose Opera, etc, each one looking more stunning than the last.

We had a pretty decent Lobster Bisque Soup to start with, followed by Spring Chicken (we were expecting the Chinese-style deep-fried chicken but this was a nicely-grilled surprise), Charcoal Lychee Cake (a little hard and coarse in texture), Lavender Cake (which was not lavender in color; texture was still coarse but faint hints of lavender could be detected), gorgeous Rose Latte (with real rose petals) and Iced Mocha. The entire meal cost us less than SGD$40.00 after currency conversion, for so many items!

KINSAHI JAPANESE RESTAURANT
33 Jalan Seladang, Taman Abad, Level Lower Ground LG-01, KSL City, 80250, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Tel: +607 289 1892

Kinsahi is a stunning and exquisite Japanese restaurant located at none other than KSL City itself that blew us away, looking like a very expensive restaurant with its interior reflective pond, dry ice and bridges decor. You'd feel like you were caught in a Japanese fairy garden but when you study the menu, you would be blown away by how affordable the food is, even without currency conversion.

I had a Salmon Zosui (Japanese porridge) dish that was very delectable, served with salmon sashimi slices that one could either dip into the porridge or eat as a side dish on its own. The Beau had a Teriyaki Chicken Bento Set that came with miso soup, vegetables, and fruit as well, the full works. A Kiwi Juice completed the meal, and cost us around SGD$28.00 after currency conversion.

TAIWAN RECIPE RESTAURANT

33 Jalan Seladang, Lot LG-44 KSL City, Taman Abad 80250, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Tel: +607 289 1571

Located in KSL City itself is a Taiwanese restaurant simply known as Taiwan Recipe Restaurant, serving up delicious food with pretty friendly service. We enjoyed the Wine Braised Pork With Rice dish and Spicy Beef Noodles followed by Flowerpot Ice-cream for dessert. The meal cost around SGD$30.00 for both of us, and servings were very generous.

NYONYA LEAF RESTAURANT
19 Jalan Wong Ah Fook, MK-307 City Square, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Tel: +607 332 1100

Located conveniently at City Square Shopping Mall, immediately after crossing the Woodlands Causeway into Malaysia, is Nyonya Leaf Restaurant serving up traditional Peranakan dishes in a casual setting.

I tried their Assam Laksa which was a little disappointing because of the soggy thick white noodles; The Beau had the Nasi Lemak which was not bad. It comprised a lot of ingredients such as crispy Fried Chicken, Boiled Egg, Achar (pickled vegetables), Peanuts, and Ikan Bilis (anchovies)

.

RESTORAN YA-WANG ("鸭皇药材烧腊大王")
28 Jalan Segget, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Tel: +607 224 8624
Website: None supplied

Shortly across the Causeway, lies Restoran Ya-Wang, which is also known as herbal duck king restaurant upon direct translation.  A typical coffeeshop setting with round tables, the air-conditioned eatery sells duck best, as well as an assortment of Malaysian and seafood dishes.

We shared a delicious Roast Herbal Duck (tender, moistened and redolent of herbal goodness), Duck Wings (braised in duck sauce), delectable Honey Char Siew (honey-glazed barbecued pork that melted beautifully in the mouth), crackling Roast Pork (needs no introduction), and 2 vegetables dishes. There were 7 of us, and each of us paid a mere SGD$8.00 for such a scrumptious feast, after currency conversion!

RESTORAN ORANG ASLI KAH LING (嘉林海番村海鮮)
Kampong Sungai Temon, Taman Perling, 81200 Johor, Malaysia
