Dinner at Jack's Place at Bukit Panjang Plaza

1 Jelebu Road Bukit Panjang #03-10 Bukit Panjang Plaza, Singapore 677743
Tel: 6892 8700

Been wanting to revisit one of my favorite restaurants for a while, but didn't get around to it till lately. There is nothing like an oldtime favorite serving up comfort food such as steaks and soups.

The Lobster Bisque (SGD$6.00) served with a crispy slice of garlic toast on the side, was creamy and sweet. The perfect appetite whetter that settled our growling bellies.

Mon Beau has the "Old Fashioned" Grilled Chicken Steak (SGD$16.80) with thick Mushroom Sauce, served with vegetables and grilled potato.

I went for my favorite Steak with Slipper Lobster Combo (SGD$29.90). The steak was succulent and drenched deliciously with black pepper sauce; while the springy lobster gave a delicate balance. Baked potato with sour cream, bacon bits and spring onions was served on the side, making sure this dish was a very filling one.

Accompanying the meal, we had Peach Soda and Red Wine - the latter of which paired smoothly with my steak.

Some New York Cheesecake with tea brought up the rear of the meal, signalling closure.

Always one of my favorite dining places under the J. Peppperdine Group; I am glad it is still aroound, with consistent standard.

To add on, Jack's Place was a saviour this Valentine's Day 2018 - I was supposed to dine out but due to last minute change of plans and most places are not taking delivery orders anymore, I called ahead to Jack's Place to pre-order my steak dinner for takeaway. Doris was super nice and took my order by phone, so that I was able to bring back Lobster Bisque, Caesar Salad, Tenderloin Steak, Black Pepper Steak,  and a White Chocolate Raspberry Mousse Cake for our homely St. Valentine's celebration. Thank you!

Valentine's Dinner 2017 at West Coast Park - Picnic

Saint Valentine's Day 2017 marked the first V-Day we celebrated as a married couple, after 10 years. Over the years, our annual celebrations often meant romantic dinners and / or staycations at various restaurants, including the restaurants listed below and in the earlier days, Sha Villa @ Somerset, Desire @ Hotel Scarlet, Roast @ One Rochester, etc.

This year, we decided to do something we have been wanting to do since forever, but never gotten around to doing it - a picnic! There were always the excuses such as "no time", "too much things to pack", "too cheap for special occasions" and "would it rain?" that prevented us from doing it, but this year we were taking no shyt.

So I tried to put together all his and my favorite things, and we settled on West Coast Park in lieu of Gardens by the Bay or Botanical Gardens (the latter just had a 250-year tree collapse a day ago!).

I ordered a Fortune Set from Pizza Hut (SGD$26.00), inclusive of 2 personal pan pizzas (we chose Curry Chicken and Hawaiian), 4 Chicken Winglets, 3 slices of Garlic Bread and 4 Breaded Chicken Strips.  The pizzas were delicious and he loves pizzas from Pizza Hut, with the thick crust and all. The box was handy for bringing around, and keeping food that we couldn't finish.

Then I also bought takeout foodstuff from Vanilla Bar & Café (review of past visit here); Jo Ann was really nice to prepare them beforehand, and kind of came up with a little special off-the-menu request; also thank you for the delicious Anchovies Toast surprise!  Okay, so from Vanilla Bar, we had Spam Fries (SGD$12.90), Serrano Ham (SGD$8.00) and Brie Cheese (SGD$12.00). The latter was meant to be a mini Charcuterie Board, and she had thoughtfully included a mini salad and anchovy toasts so it looked and tasted really good.

My mock-up at home, before we headed out to West Coast Park

Moving on, we also had Korean Strawberries (SGD$8.00) and Cherries (SGD$14.00) from Sun Moon, Red Wine (SGD$12.90 each) from Marks & Spencer, and Valentine's Chocolates alongside some other little snacks. Oh, add on the picnic mat, tealight candles and little decorations - the picnic was around SGD$160.00 - the sum equivalent to dining out at a semi fine-dining restaurant.

But it was fun - we dined at our own pace, chose the perfect sea (on the beach) that we wanted, and chatted about everything under the Sun, which was something we hadn't time to do for a long, long time. Meals these days are usually rushed or we need to make way for the next seating. We decided that we should have picnics more often, now that we have sort of gotten a headstart. There're gardens, reservoirs, nature reserves and parks which we could definitely explore; maybe we could start organizing one for the family as well.

I found myself enjoying the process of sourcing for various food to coordinate together for a picnic. But best of all, I got to enjoy a nice long meal with my Love - so here's Happy Valentine's Day to all. Remember, this day is not all about romance and lovers - it is also for the family and friends we hold dear to our hearts. Spread love, not hatred, and everyday is Valentine's Day.

Poem: Valentine's Eve

On the eve of Valentine,
He gave her a stalk of red rose,
With a smile,
To hide,
The sharp glint of knife,
Which would pierce
Through her core,
If she was aware,
Of the lie,
Behind his facade,
Smooth and suave...

Valentine's Dinner at The Carvery @ Park Hotel Alexandra (2016)

323 Alexandra Road, #07-00 Park Hotel Alexandra, Singapore 159972
Tel: 6828 8880

Time for Valentine's Day celebration, and The Beau and I decided to go simple this year, due to the overload of Chinese New Year feasting as well as our upcoming wedding in a couple of months' time. It was my turn to plan this year, so I was debating between a few choices. The Carvery at Park Hotel Alexandra came to mind because of 4 reasons: (i) it is relatively new (ii) recommendation from fellow blogger friend *H (iii) poolview (iv) value for money set meal for Valentine's Day.

For SGD$188.00++ per couple, the Valentine's dinner included 2 glasses of Veuve Cliquot Champagne, 2 Cocktails, an Appetiser of salad from the bar, a Soup, a Seafood Platter,  an Intermezzo and food items from the buffet bar.  Pretty good deal, I would say, given that the normal buffet dinner here cost SGD$52.00.

Sadly, the poolview was  not all that visible because there's  no alfresco poolside dining, and the reflection of the glass at night erased the pool view outside. Nonetheless, we appreciated the service crew's efforts at putting us as close to the pool as possible, under the circumstances.... if I stare out hard enough and squint, I could still glimpse the crystal blue of the 24-hour pool as well as swimmers roaming about.

The poolside bar, Aqua Luna, is also visible from our sight - a lone, quaint bar surrounded by expanse of waters, how lovely; the description of "by the emerald shimmers of the pool" was way apt.

A walk around the restaurant reaped in all the visionary rewards of all food available for the taking - salad bar, array of seafood, the carving board consisting of Salmon Wellington, US Black Ribeye Angus, Duck a l'Orange, and Pork OP Ribs with apple sauce, and of course the desserts section.

Sadly, except for the desserts section comprising some heart-shaped pastries and marshmallows, and the table settings, the restaurant itself was devoid of any Valentine's decoration -  no floating hearts or papier-mache Cupids etc, like the other restaurants we went previously for our annual V-day meals.  Service was efficient and professional overall though.

We started with Bread and olive oil dip - the bread were hard but we enjoyed the one with the cheese inside.

Then they served us the Soup - an interesting duo of Oven Roasted Tomato Soup with Leek and Potato Soup, served with a single Manchego Cheese Fritter in the midst. The tomato soup was delicious with a zesty touch and the leek-potato soup was creamy and smooth; the cheese fritter was a tasty touch.

Next, it was the Seafood Platter - freshly-shuckled seasonal Oysters, Red Claw Crab, Tiger Prawns, and Salmon Sashimi, served with shallot oil dressing, Maldon sea salt dressing, Horseradish and Chilli Cream on the side.  The seafood was fresh and delightful; especially the springy salmon sashimi and tiger prawns.

An Intermezzo of Yuzu Sorbet in Champagne was served next, to cleanse our platter. I loved the citrusy lusciousness and refreshing flavour of this palate cleanser-  if there was a cocktail version of this I would've been glad to order it.

Then we roamed the restaurant to garner our own main courses from the buffet counters. I started with more Seasonal Oysters, some very scrumptious Cod Fish in Fruit Honey Broth, a small scoop of deliciously unique Duck Confit Rice, a small piece of Beef and Seafood Velouté.

My next and final platter was made up of Desserts -  some Chocolate Eclair, Chocolate Cupcake, Tarts, Apple Crumble, Marshmallows and Oreo Cheesecake slice.  The desserts were saccharine and tasty.

Other items such as Salmon Wellington, Angus Beef and Duck a l'Orange were impressive items as well - tender, sumptuous.

The buffet selection was not wide and varied - truth be knownst - but the unique recipes and quality of food was something to reckon with. We enjoyed the food tremendously.

Cocktails was the final touch for this celebratory meal - a Lime and Cucumber concoction for him and a pretty pink Guava cocktail for me.  We were allowed to bring our cocktails out to the beautiful poolside to enjoy, so we indulged by the scenic views and breezes while we sipped the night away.

Overall this was a simple but lovely celebration of love and romance. Happy St. Valentine's Day to all of you sweethearts and friends out there (yes, who says friends cannot celebrate the love of friendship together?!)!

Valentine's Dinner at Ristorante Amarone (2015)

168 Robinson Road #01-08 / 09 / 10 Capital Tower, Singapore 068912
Tel: 6423 0464

This year, we decided to try out Ristorante Amarone for our Valentine's Day dinner, since I pass by this elegant Italian restaurant pretty often, and have heard good things about it.

Set in a charming, contemporary setting complete with high ceilings, subtle lightings, wide glass windows and a wine bottles lined pillar and red flooring, and sitting in plain view of the busy CBD area, this restaurant is not to be missed.

The moment we stepped in, the crew all greeted us warmly and this impeccable service remained throughout the rest of our meal, which was rather impressive. Chef Domenico and Director Wilson came over personally to ensure that everything was lovely for us - a very nice gesture that brought smiles to the patrons' faces instantly.

This is the Valentine's Day menu (SGD$98++ each), specially created for this romantic occasion this year. Since there were two choices, The Beau and I ordered one set each to try out.

A glass of welcome drink (Prosecco) was served when we sat down.

We started with bread rolls, dipped in their subtly-flavored olive oil. I liked the flavor of the sweet roll but we both thought the texture was a little hard.

They brought us a small starter of heart-shaped puff pastries, to sweeten the palate before we began our small feast.

For his appetizer, The Beau had a Zucchini and Potato Cream soup- a soup with a smooth, gentle flavor. The starchy texture of the potato was a nice contrast to the creaminess of the soup, making it an appetite whetter as we looked forward to the other courses.

Mine was the Eggplant Medallion with Quail Egg & Black Truffle - a combination of al my favorite items. The lovely swish when one bites into the juicy eggplant was present, before the teeth made further contact with the bouncy but soft mushroom. The quail egg provided a beautiful balance to the heavier flavor of the truffle, and adds a dash of brightness to the dark dish.

The Beau's first course was the Orecchiette Pasta with Artichoke and Pancetta - the latter of which was quite chewy, perhaps because its pork belly. He enjoyed the ear-shaped pasta as well; it was of a taut texture that was springy and not too hard nor soft.

For my set, the first course was the Radicchio and Fontina Cheese Crepes - basically a meltingly soft crepe filled with Italian leaf chicory and bursting deliciously with luxurious serving of cheese.

For main course, The Beau had the Pork Tenderloin with Porcini Cream Sauce. The pork fillets were served in 3 neat slices. The pork was not exceedingly succulent, but do count on a good crunch to the solid slabs of meat. The creamy mushroom sauce gave the pork steak a tasty sweetness.

My main course was the Duck Breast with Balsamic Vinegar and Fig Marmalade Sauce. The duck breast slices were incredibly tender in this case, giving way to the knife easily, and melting in the mouth in a scrumptious heap of saltiness, sourness and sweet assortment of flavors.

For desserts, The Beau had the Mango Gelato - a very refreshing dessert with the right amount of tartness to it, but mango's strong aroma was intact definitely. Paired with lovely berries,  this dessert was definitely a cool welcome to the savoury dishes we had for dinner.

My dessert was the Chocolate Mousse Sponge Cake with Crushed Biscuits. The cake was moist and soft, filling the palate generously with dark cocoa's lovely taste. The crumbly base further enhanced the texture of the fluffy cake, completing our meal beautifully.

Besides that, there was a Polaroid shot taken of us being made into a Valentine's card as well as some macarons for us.

Everything was lovely and perfect - from the service to the food to the ambience. Thank you Ristorante Amarone for making our Valentine's Day a wonderful night.
