Tea Break at Baba Chews Bar and Eatery @ East Coast

Address: 86 East Coast Road #01-01, Katong Square, Singapore 428788

Tel: 6723 2025

Website: https://babachews.com.sg/

Operation Hours

Daily 6.30am to 10.30pm

Baba Chews Bar & Eatery pay tribute to Mr. Chew Joo Chiat, in this beautiful heritage-rich neighbourhood. They serve up Peranakan, Malacca and Western dishes and drinks. The interior is intricately beautiful, and service is quite heartwarming.

I was here on a Sunday afternoon after a work event. To be frank, quite surprised by the lack of customers / diners here as most other cafes in the Katong / Joo Chiat stretch are crowded. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the quietness.

Started with a hot pot of Honey Lemon Tea (SGD$5.00); the cup was vintage-Asian style, almost transporting me back in time.

I also had a glass of Pinot Grigio (SGD$15.00). They have quite a good selection of wine, and also cocktails.

As I'd taken brunch and would be taking dinner soon, I settled for just a slice of cake. I had wanted to try the exotic sounding Butterfly Blue Pea Osmanthus Chocolate Cake (SGD$12.00) but to my disappointment,  it wasn't available.

So I settled for the Ondeh Ondeh Cake (SGD$12.00) - soft layers of aromatic, pandan kaya cake with gula melaka, and topped with hardened coconut cream (so it was lovely, like icing on the cake literally) and coconut shavings.  While it made for a lovely sweet treat, I liked that it wasn't cloyingly so.

Enjoyed my chilling out experience here alot, and can foresee myself coming back for lunch and drinks someday soon again.

Now, moving on, if you like Baba Chews Bar & Eatery, and this gorgeous neighborhood filled with cafes, restaurants and close to the sea, let's see what NEW LAUNCHES / PROJECTS are here so you can make this your homegrounds:

Lunch at HarriAnns Table Cafe @ Bugis Junction

230 Victoria Street #01-01A Bugis Junction Towers, Singapore 188024
Tel: 6238 1200

Whenever I exited the MRT Station at Bugis, I would find myself being treated to aromas from HarriAnns Cafe. The Peranakan cafe has a small enclosed interior and long open-air exterior area, serving up traditional Nonya dishes at good prices.

I had the Nonya Curry Chicken with Rice (SGD$7.90) - thick and tasty curry broth pooling utterly tender chicken and soft whole potato. The plate of white rice was served with Achar aka pickled vegetables, whetting the appetite further.

Could not resist the colorful mini Nonya Kuehs (SGD$3.00) so I ordered a box. They tasted every bit as good as they look so I happily lapped up the cubes of red bean kueh, multi-layer kueh, yam kueh and pandan kueh etc.

Casual dining concept with hearty food generoualy portioned- I will be back to try more for sure.

[Invited Tasting] Christmas Buffet at Element Restaurant @ Amara Hotel

165 Tanjong Pagar Road, Lobby Level, Amara Hotel, Singapore 088539
Tel: 6879 2607
Price: SGD$138.00 for Christmas Eve Dinner (Adult) ,
top up SGD$2.00 for free-flow alcoholic drinks.

My last visit at Element @ Amara Hotel (review here) left a fabulous impression, so when it comes to Christmas feasting, how could I not revisit Element? Besides the usual delectable spread at Element Restaurant - such as Japanese cuisine, Chinese fare, Italian food and Desserts counter, etc - let us see what's instore this Christmas for feasting in merriment?

There's the tender, juicy Peranakan-Roasted Turkey with buah keluak sauce - well moistened and utterly delicious. Whoever said that turkey meat is tough should stand aside.

Cognac Lobster Bisque - creamy, sweet and warming the soul, but lacking in the distinct crustacean flavour that I have tried (at other locations) before.

There's the beautifully-arranged tray of Assorted Cold Cuts - Parma Ham, Salami and Prosciutto, each piece tasting as good as it looks.

I enjoyed the Roasted Duck Rilette with Red Wine very much as well, casting a lovely coarse-and-smooth texture in my mouth as it melted beautifully. This dish is served with dried fruits ad gherkin salsa.

Next personal favorite of mine was the Stir-fried Moreton Bay Bug with Salted Egg Batter - may also be known as "bay lobster"  or "slipper lobster" - the springy flesh crunched beautifully in the mouth, exuding lusciousness of its thickly-coated salted egg batter.

Moving on, another addictive dish - Roasted Chicken with Meat Floss - crackling skin and tender flesh, flavour enhanced dramatically by meat floss blanketing the exterior.

Finally, my great love - Grilled Harami Beef with Foie Gras Cubes - blissfully indulgent, melty and delicious for sure. Think succulent beef paired with creamy foie gras for that perfect combination; it was like food heaven awaited us.

Other food items include Butter Pumpking Squares (a tad too buttery for my liking), Steamed Broccoli with Conpoy and Chinese Mushrooms (looking deceptively simple but sharply palatable). Steamed Sea Bass, beautiful arrangement of Fresh Prawns, and Tuna Tataki with Cucumber Ribbons and Puffed Quinoa (amazing stuff).

Desserts always wraps up a meal flawlessly, and over here, it is no exception. The Assortment of Macarons is gorgeous and not cloyingly sweet like how most macarons are. Some special festive flavours for the season include salted caramel, gingerbread spices and coconut.

Chempedek Yule Log Cake is a signature flavour here at Element. Elegant in appearance, this dazzling dessert leaves a sweet aroma in the mouth, like a beautiful lasting impression. This logcake is available for takeout purchase at SGD$28.00 (half kg) / SGD$52.00 (one kg).

Raspberry Chocolate with Petit Marshmallow Log Cake is an innovative creation with a pudding-like texture because of the marshmallow, like satin upon the tongue compared to its spongy counterparts. Flavour is light, and there is the mild note of alcohol. This cake can be purchased at SGD$26.00 (half kg) / SGD$52.00 (one kg).

Overall, we enjoyed the dining experience at Element @ Amara very much once again, basking in the festive vibes and gobbling ourselves silly on the quality, tasty spread right here.  If you haven't made your Christmas plans yet, or have no idea where to go - Element @ Amara is your answer.

Thank you Lindy and team for hosting us, as well as the invite!

[Invited Tasting] Dinner at The Quarters @ Tanjong Pagar

16 Enggor Street #01-09 Icon Village, Singapore 079717
Tel: 6834 4174

The Quarters is located at Icon Village at Tanjong Pagar - one of the most bustling business districts in Singapore, is helmed by Chef Chung Deming, also the owner herein. The restaurant serves up classic Singaporean dishes with fusion twists, constantly tweaking the menus to feed demand for fresh take on Singapore classics. Some of the signatures comprise Har Cheong Kai (prawn paste chicken), Shiok Fries (with salted egg sauce and chilli crab sauce) as well as an assortment of pastas and burgers.

I was honoured to be invited to try out the new menu. Upon arrival I noted the open concept of the restaurant - cosy and inviting. What appealed most was the chalk art on the walls, giving it a hipster-y feel but add a touch of class.

We started with Fwah! (SGD$18.00) - an innovative dish made up of melty foie gras with kaya on crisp toast, an interesting combination of sweet-savoury flavours; runny scrambled eggs cascade from the top of the deck, creamy and indulgent.

Next, Salted Egg Mid-Wings (SGD$12.00) - grilled mid-wings slathered generously with salted egg aioli, and artistically so, the juicy chicken wings almost looked like they had stripes. Nice flavour, not overwhelming at all; and there's even a small salad on the side to balance the meaty appetiser.

The Buah Keluak Ayam (SGD$12.00) - juicy slices of chicken with crispy skin and buah keluak rempah - elusive black nut paste, an essential of Peranakan dishes.

Final appetiser of the night was Ooh La La! (SGD$16.00) - succulent Clams in Chilli Crab Sauce - fiery and addictive. Tossed into the mix are also huge pieces of croutons, adding crunch to every bite.

Moving on to Grilled Vegetables, we had Vine Tomatoes with salt and special marinade (SGD$10.00), Shitake Mushrooms with salt (SGD$9.00) and Asparagus served with fermented soy bean and garlic (SGD$14.00).  The vegetables had a delicious smokey hint to it, and I believe even the non-veggie lovers would also enjoy this dish.

From the Charcoal Grill section, we had the Lobster (SGD$68.00) spread out beautifully - butter poached and charcoal-licked, served with fresh lemon wedges on the side. The lobster was fresh, luscious and springy in texture; no disillusion that one person could easily finish one lobster here.

Next, Baby Back Ribs (SGD$24.00) - moist, succulent and flesh off the rack easily; with special BBQ marinade to give it a sweet tinge, served with fries and salad on the side.

The Angus Ribeye Steak (SGD$38.00) - all 250 grams of it was tender with smokey hints, nearly crispy-edged. Fries and salad were served on the side. I have to add that their fries were really good - the right amount of salt, crispy, and remained crispy even after a couple of hours.

We also had the Quarters Fried Rice (SGD$14.00) - a traditional local zichar favorite composed of rice, eggs, salted fish bits and garlic.

The above items can be ordered on an a la carte basis, or if you have a group of 4, you can order the Quarters Platter (SGD$128.00), which includes Salted Egg Mid-wings, Baby Back Ribs, Buah Keluak Ayam, Angus Ribeye, Quarters Fried Rice and Grilled Vegetable Platter. This is totally value for money and allows you to try an assortment of some of their finer dishes from different categories.

Finally, desserts - the creative names of these desserts disguise the true nature of the dessert at first glance, but gradually the meanings sink in. We tried first the Duriancanboleh (SGD$8.50) which was actually Durian Creme Brulee, with a crackling caramel crust and utterly creamy curd redolent of durian's unique aroma.

Last item was the Kaya Bomb (SGD$9.00) - we were advised to pop the entire pastry into the mouth, and I did. The explosion of sweet coconut jam filled up the mouth deliciously, and the first word that came to mind was "shiok" (local lingo for "very good").

We have come to the end of the tasting session, and modsin food here is undeniably good - unpretentious, delightful, capturing the hearts of a true-blue Singaporean. Thank you Chef Deming for hosting us, and thank you Ivan for extending the invite.

[Invited Tasting] Gila Durian High Tea Set by The Peranakan @ Orchard Hotel

442 Orchard Road #02-01 Claymore Connect, Orchard Hotel, Singapore 238879
Tel: 6262 4428

Durian lovers (or, strangely, as I have met - non durian lovers but those who love durian desserts) alert. Here's some stunning indulgence by The Peranakan to keep your cravings satiated, a tea set consisting of creative desserts involving aromatic durian.

Gila Durian Set (SGD $38.00 per pax; minimum 2 to go), including free flow Pandan or Lemongrass tea, consists of 7 courses in all, made with your favorite Malaysia Kampung durian, D24 durian and Maoshan Wang durian.

We started with Toasties with Durian Puree, fluffy with a crunchy edge and piled lusciously with a dollop of creamy durian puree.

Next up, D24 Durian Pengat, rich and velvety so it melts in the tongue and flows through the body sweetly.

Then it was Pandan Chiffon Cake with D24 snd Kampung Durian Puree. The Pandan Chiffon was cottony and light on the palate, a beautiful contrast to the dash of moist, creamy puree.

This was followed by the Intermezzo of the day - Crispy Fried Fish Skin with durian. The crackling, savoury snack paced the palate for more sweet treats to come.

Pulot Enti D24 comprised a sticky rice stained dark blue with pea flower and a nice scoop of fragrant durian cream.

Moving on, Fragrant Rice with Maoshan Wang Durian - cunningly contrasting the robust flavor with a plainer accompaniment, savoured delicately.

Finally, D24 Durian Chendol, a piquant touch to a traditional dessert complete with brown sugar and green jelly strips, chillingly pleasant.

Might be a little overwhelming, but the creations were perfections in small portions; satisfying but not cloying.

Thank you Chef Raymond for the sweet treat.
