Taking care of leather goods can be expensive and one tends to spend a lot of efforts to maintain them in prime condition, ensure that there are no scratches or scuff, and polish them to look sparkly new. But, besides its namesake, there are other marvellous products such as the Varnished Japanese Oakwood Shoe Horn and 100% Horse Hair Shoe Brush, Saphir Sole Guard and a range of shoe polishes.

I got hold of one of the 100% Horse Hair Shoe Brush (SGD$21.90). Then I used one of The Beau's old shoes to experiment - it is a single scuffed black leather shoe. I dusted the front of the shoe gingerly with the horse hair shoe brush, cleaning the dirt effectively and it facilitates the polish later very well, enhancing the quality of the shine.

Other qualities of this Shoe Brush include:

• the use of 100% horsetail hair which is stiff enough to work polish yet delicate on fine leather; it also resists breakage
• has densely and uniformly-placed bristles that clean faster and buffs polish into an even shine
• it is designed ergonomically with curve and finger-hold for superior usability
• handcrafted from the highly durable and water-resistant Schima wood used in construction of boat!

Moving on, I also decided to try out my Saphir Renovateur Leather Cleaner and Conditioner (SGD$28.00) for 75ml tub. Bear in mind that this is not merely meant for leather shoes - but is suitable for use on leather couches and sofas, leather bags, leather wallets, according to the store manager Mervin.

I dabbed a little of the smooth, creamy conditioner (made of mink oil, lanolin and beeswax) onto my slightly worn-out Gucci leather bag, polished gently, and ended up with a spick and span shiny tote that was very soft to the touch.

The Honeymoon Series [iii] - Preparing for the Trip

After you have finished with Part 1 and Part 2 of the Honeymoon Series, finally, destinations are selected and the trip is booked! Research has been done too, and now all we have to do is to prepare for the trip.

This means..... shopping!

We are going Europe in November, the start of Winter. This also means that while the weather is cooling to cold, we won't be enjoying snow. That's good enough for me.

MEDICINE AND PILLS

No matter where I go, medicine and pills are very important for me to bring along, for we will never know when stomachache or fever strikes. Clarinase is essential as well, to counter colds and blocked nose during cold weather.

And for countries with time difference, I always prepare Melatonin - aka magic pills to help regulate sleeping hours to reduce the effect of jet lag.

SKINCARE

In colder regions and climates, the skin tends to be drier too. I have purchased (both online and offline), an assortment of moisturizers and hydrating creams, lotions, etc for the face and body. For countries and climates as such, I will happily indulge in some oil-based and oil-infused products, as well as richer creams.

COATS AND CLOTHES

Since the weather is chilly, I will be bringing thicker and warmer clothes as well as a variety of jackets, sweaters and coats.

On top of that, some thick stockings and my black leather hand gloves for extra protection, as well as mufflers.  Singapore's retailers Cold Wear and Winter Time are good places to shop for basic, affordable winter wear.

FOOTWEAR

Usually pretty much a heels person, I am not sure if it would be wise to bring along my 4 - 5 inches heels for the trip. The reason being that we are going with a group tour so might need to walk faster to catch up, and pavements in European cities aren't exactly even.

I intend to bring along my new Adidas sports shoes. Those would be practical even if it rains and grounds are wet.

I have also ordered a pair of low-heeled high black boots from MyGlamorous.SG.  They are soft, nearly velvety, and extremely to wear and walk in (at least for now, when I am just testing them out). Plus, they would look good with many outfits.

SECURITY AND SAFETY (STORAGE)

Luggage locks and hidden compartments are definitely in place, as well as travel insurance. I bought a rather comprehensive travel policy because well, one never knows.

I also prepared a couple of smaller pouches with slim straps that I can easily sling over my shoulder and keep it tucked inside my jackets and coats. There we are - nothing for the potential pickpockets or snatch thieves to see.

INTERNATIONAL / TRAVEL ADAPTER

Remember these, especially in an era where we are not able to live without our gadgets. These will come in very handy for your handphones, tablets, cameras as well as power-banks etc.

DRY FOOD RATIONS

If you think you might not be able to survive on food in your chosen destinations, or that you will be hungry in the middle of the night, or you want to save some money, pack some Instant Noodles or easy-to-make Campbell Soup, etc into your bags. They would come in handy when you least expect them.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS AND MONEY

Last but not least, and most importantly, your Passport (ensure it has at least 6 months' validity), Visas (if required) and money - whether in the form of cash, credit cards or travellers' cheques.

A List of things to pack has also helped tremendously, to ensure that nothing gets left out.

I think I am ready to jet set and go enjoy my Honeymoon. How about you?

The Nuptial Series (xvii) - Shopping for the Wedding Shoes

So, it is 2 months away from the wedding, so there seems to be more things to do now. In this month alone, we need to set aside time to:

(i) file the Notice of Marriage via ROM website;
(ii) meet the florist for the wedding hall decor;
(iii) get the wedding car (okay, thankfully the Bro is taking care of that);
(iv) going to the bridal studio to try the gowns and select which ones I want;
(v) shop for wedding bands;
(vi) arrange for bridesmaids' meeting (very important!!);
(v) confirming the guest list and sending out the invites;
(vi) planning the wedding song list; and
(vii) shopping for the wedding shoes.

That, and a couple of surprises I shall  not divulge for now.

I shall write about the bottom of the list first. I had thought this was going to be a breezy, no-brainer process but I was very wrong.  There are so many types of shoes out there, and when I walked around the boutiques I could not seem to find one that screamed the themes I had in mind. From departmental stores to Jimmy Choo, from local's favorite Charles & Keith to Christian Louboutin..... and now I am considering custom-made shoe stores such as The Shoemaker's Elf, Christy Ng or Sinderella.

Why is it tougher for me to hunt for shoes than the average bride? Firstly, my own ideals. Secondly, my feet are size 4, so that takes out alot of mainstream brand starting with size 5 and above. Thirdly, I am petite and I need my heels to be at least 5-inches high, so any store that does not have that is out. Forthly, I want slip-on, peep-toe high heels only - no straps because it would be cumbersome to wear and remove, no covered or pointy heels though they look good because I'll don't want to walk weird in them and trip.

Colours-wise,  I want pearl, ivory or silver. Texture confuses me because I am torn between lace, glitters, smooth satin or irridescent silver (reflective).   During my hunts, I did come across a few that I covet, and will look along that line - such as the two Christian Louboutin ones above. Plain, but I might be able to add on shoes accessories such as shoe clips (stones, lace, diamante, feathers etc - you name it) or shoe chains etc from Heels Diva.  Good idea, no? Buy a plain pair of shoes but decorate it extensively so that after the wedding, I could just remove the glitters and clips and wear for work on everyday basis. Voilà!

A couple of designs that interested me greatly were also this lacey pair by Guess - devastatingly elegant, feminine and beautiful. The height and style are right for me, price is very affordable and the fabric should be comfortable as well. Unfortunately as of today, end Jan 2016, this pair is sold out all across Singapore and US, at least for my size.

The other design I am hugely excited about is the "glass slipper" concept. I need to discuss with the bespoke shoe-makers on the kind of material used. If this works out, I am going to be a Cinderella on my own wedding day!

The Flirt Store - Online Shoes Shopping cum Concierge Delivery

So... I chanced upon The Flirt Store and checked out some of the shoes on its website. Note that I am not a fan of online shopping, despite the fact that technology has evolved greatly, and most people I know are already shopping from the comfort of their homes / offices / on the go.

One of the reasons that I demur from online shopping is that we are unable to try the items on for feel, look and most importantly, size. For full list of reasons on the why not, read on here.

Anyway, I decided to give The Flirt Store (claiming to supply "luxurious shoes") a try, since they offer concierge delivery service. As in, their concierge would bring the shoes personally to your place of convenience, let you try on them for sizes, design and comfort, before you decide if you want to get anything at all.

I selected three pairs (because another two pairs were either sold out, or did not have my size). I was a little displeased that they kept asking if I was a size 34 or 37, because they claimed I chose 37 - no way, not via email or phone correspondence such a mistake could have been possible.

The concierge guy was friendly and polite. So he took out a few pairs of shoes for me to try on. I had deliberately worn my comfortable Pazzion rhinestones-studded high-heeled slippers for ease of trying on shoes this day.

I tried on the first pair that I had selected - black and silver peep-toes high heels. It felt rather comfortable as I walked about a litte, and I had to admit it looked good on me (and with most of my black outfits).

Next, I tried on the electric blue,  satin-like peep-toe heels with rhinestone designs at the front. They felt rather all right as well, on the plush carpeted floors, and looked good. Plus, I have not owned a pair of shoes in this color before.

Finally, I slipped into the final pair I chose - black peep-toes heels with wavy lines and purple soles. It looked good, but was uncomfortable to walk in because of the wavy lines - I kept feeling like the shoes were going to come off.

I also tried on a pair of pink ones that I did not like. I did not ask what were in the other 4 boxes, since he brought 8 pairs of shoes along (different sizes of the same designs, perhaps?). I decided to take the first two pairs because they looked and felt quite good (though nothing like when you slip into a pair of Nine West's soft cushy heels), and because he'd come all the way to deliver the shoes.

He also promised that if the rhinestones dropped off or something we could always let them know and they would fix for us.

Payment could be made by credit online, but it was my first time ordering and I wasn't sure if anything would fit, I selected cash option. He also brought along a Nets machine, just in case we decided to buy more, or did not have enough cash on us.

While the concept was good, service was quite efficient and polite, and I did receive a nice percentile discount, I do have to write an honest review:-

(i) I finally worn the shoes officially a few days later. While still comfortable, I think they are seriously overpriced for the quality. They are like the kind we could get for $50.00 or less in , say, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc, and these shoes are MIC (not meant as discrimination, but let's all be practical).

Each pair costs between SGD$99.00 - SGD$119.00 but I believe that a large portion of the costs goes to the concierge service.

(ii) The soles were somewhat slippery, which plays down to its quality once more. I guess I could not make an informed decision because I was walking on plush carpeting the other day when trying.

(iii) I received many calls before the delivery, to confirm, and re-confirm my orders and meeting date. It was as though they were afraid I would not show up or anything. As mentioned, I also had to keep repeating my shoe size, despite having replied them via email (in black and white) that I am a 34. After the sale, there was no thank you email or text, which I felt was a small letdown - don't delivery services usually have these?

Let's see what is the lifespan of each pair of these shoes. I shall update again accordingly. For my current shoes regardless of brands (could be anything from Charles & Keith to the Aldo / Nine West range), all have a lifespan of about a year.

EDIT (four days later, my second time wearing it)

Note that the side (the silver grid) has already been torn off. Mind you - these heels are high, I don't wear them to dance or run or fight wars, neither have I stepped into any muddy puddles. Hence, conclusion - quality is very mediocre despite the prettiness and initial comfort of wearing these shoes. I wouldnt buy again, nor would I recommend my friends or colleagues to do so - no point paying 60% of the money for concierge service.
