Review on Red LED Light Facial Therapy by EHA Clinic @ Orchard [Sponsored]

1 Scotts Road #15-01 Shaw Centre, Singapore 228208
Tel: 6235 3325

After enjoying the Rejuran Treatment (review here) at Elias Tam Hair & Aesthetics (EHA) Clinic, I was excited to be back, this time trying the Red LED Light Therapy (SGD$130.00).

What's this treatment about? It is a quick, efficient and painless treatment with multiple benefits - using red light penetration into the dermis to boost circulation and produce collagen. In short, treat the face for issues such as acne, scars, eczema and wrinkles etc.

My makeup was cleansed and my eyes were covered with several layers. A layer of cooling serum was applied to my skin while the therapist warned me that the red light would "feel like the sun is directly above you" (citing her exact words!)

Dr. Elias Tam himself assured me that the light was safe, so I closed my eyes and went to rest while my skin received this treatment.

Boy, was the therapist's words right on cue - in my shut-eye world of darkness, I could feel the bright red glare invade my darkness, painting it red. Physically I didn't feel any discomfort or heat though, so all was good.

After about 20 minutes, the device was shut off and I slowly opened my eyes. With the mirror above me, I could see that my skin was glowing with bright fairness and supple. It felt so good, I went shopping in town with my naked bright face.

Thank you Dr. Elias Tam and team for taking care of my skin once again, and never failing to recommend exciting new stuff all the time!

Afternoon Tea at Costa Coffee @ Somerset 313

313 Orchard Road #01-29 Somerset 313, Singapore 238895
Tel: 6636 9774

As chance would have it, I held several appointments at Costa Coffee at Somerset 313 because of its centralised location and the availability of seats in afternoons. Costa Coffee has about 1,000 outlets in UK itself, and another about 1,000 outlets across the world, making it a global coffeeshop for all, to enjoy a wide range of beverages and some light pastries.

I first tried their Coconut Iced Mocha (specials), and then moved on to other drinks. The Matcha Latte (aka "green tea latte") was thick, rich and aromatic of green tea's flavour, perking me up easily.

The latest drink I tried is another of their specials, the White Coffee Mocha, a lovely roast with sweet notes of white chocolate. I also loved how their foam art is a subtle design of their logo (3 beans interlinked) - simple but so elegant looking.

Yes, Costa Coffee definitely makes quality coffee, and in unique seasonal flavours too. I will continue to be holding appointments here for sometime, so I can enjoy their nice coffee and good service.

Lunch at Media Bar @ JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach

30 Beach Road 1/F East Tower, JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach, Singapore 189763
Tel: 6818 1915

Situated within the stunning new hotel JW Marriott Singapore South Beach is Media Bar, a gastropub offering bar bites and signature burgers on the menu, by Executive Chef Stefano Di Salvo, as well as an international selection of drinks. What's special about it is also the vibrant dining experience this place offers, with its 24 TV screens - a number of which are installed onto the bar tabletop itself.

Service was excellent and the decor was classy meets athletic. Sports events are the main focus here, as the name implies - but sadly Media Bar is set to close sometime after Formula One (F1) Night Race this year.

I came here for lunch, and was delighted to get to enjoy their super-affordable Executive Set Lunch (SGD$17.90++), comprising of 3 courses.

To start off, there was a lovely Salad comprising lettuce, tomato, cucumber and Parmesan slices, with a light seasoning - definitely a delicious appetite-whetter.

For Mains, one could choose from Tagliatelle with Calamari Ragout and Olives, or Roast Chicken with Roast Potatoes. We had one of each, so that we could share and try.

The Tagliatelle's portion was huge, and laden with ingredients such as porcini mushrooms, squid cubes, and olives - an incredibly flavourful pasta dish tasting like aglio olio but with broth.

The crispy-skinned Roast Chicken dish came with incredibly tender flesh; so tender, it nearly melted in the mouth in bursts of sumptuousness.

Finally, we had the dessert, which was Tiramisu that did not look impressive. However, the first bite had me swooning, feeling the bliss of coffee, alcohol and fluffy cream teasing my palate, leaving me intoxicated, yearning for more.

Overall dining experience at Media Bar was fabulous, and I hope to be back sometime soon again, for drinks and more of those Singapore-inspired bar grub.

[Media Invite] Chang Sensory Trails 2018, Tasting @ Little Elephant Thai Bistro

Event: Chang Sensory Trails 2018 (Thai Food Festival)
Date: 31 August 2018 to 1 September 2018
Time: 4.00pm to 10.00pm
Venue: The Lawn @ Marina Bay

Chang Sensory Trails is the annual Thai food festival organised by Thailand's leading beer brand, Chang (pronounced as "Zhang") Beer. This is its 3rd year in Singapore, and what should you be keeping a lookout for, besides Chang Beer?

Well, how about 24 signature Thai dishes offered by 8 Singapore-based Thai restaurants, to tantalise your palate? The participating restaurants are (in alphabetical order):

  • Aroy Dee
  • Baan Ying
  • Bangkok Jam
  • Gin Khao
  • Little Elephant Thai Bistro
  • Long Chim
  • Tamarind Hill
  • Un-Yang-Kor-Dai

This event serves to bring about the culture of "Lamiat" across the world - attention to details and looking beyond the ordinary, even in something as simple as culinary experience. Thai cuisine demonstrates a deep form of Lamiat, through the use of many different spices, herbs and ingredients - Thai Food Festival strives to bring the real and natural flavours Thai cuisine outside of Thailand. Besides delectable dishes, there are also illustrations by Singapore Illustrator Galatik Captain found on booth walls, as well as amazing performance by local bands O.K. Ready and 53A.

As a little teaser, we shall unravel our culinary experience at one of the participating outlets, a 3-month old restaurant Little Elephant Thai Bistro, located at Tiong Bahru area. One of the co-founders, Alfred, sources for all the restaurant decor from Thailand, giving it an authentic local-Thai feel, stopping time for us when we stepped in.

Little Elephant Thai Bistro

Address: 57 Eng Hoon Street, #01-72 Singapore 160057 (beside Tiong Bahru Bakery)
Tel: 6224 1646

For Chang Sensory Trails, the 3 signature dishes they will be serving are:
  1. Grilled Pork Neck Salad (Nam Tok Kor Moo Yang) (SGD$13.00)
    - interesting texture, nearly crunchy, with gentle tangy hints, served with raw vegetables such as long beans and cucumber slices.
  2. Grilled Pork Neck (Kor Moo Yang) (SGD$10.00)
    - done "moo-ping" style, this grilled pork neck was chewy yet lent an edge of crisp unbeknownst to the palate, with tasty flavours exploding softly in the mouth.
  3. Stir-fried Sous Vide Beef with Holy Basil (Krapow Neua) (SGD$22.00)
    - another flavorful dish with hints of spiciness, and very succulent (sous vide for 48 hrs) beef basking in aroma of basil's herbish notes.

We tried an assortment of other dishes this restaurant has to offer as well, starting with the Vegetarian Spring Rolls aka Poh Piah Tod (SGD$8.00) - crackling skin wrapped with a variety of vegetables such as turnip, etc; tastes good especially with the special homemade sauce served on the side.

Then there was the Stir-Fried Prawn in Yellow Curry Sauce (SGD$20.00), aka Phad Poong Karee, a lovely dish with big, fresh succulent prawns, yellow curry and peppers; mildly spicy.

Next, the Stir-Fried Salted Egg Squid (SGD$18.00), aka Pla Meuk Phad Kai Kem, localizing the taste so there was a good balance of umami and sweetness, over fresh, springy squid pieces.

Finally, a dish that one can't miss out on at any good Thai restaurant - Tom Yum with Prawns (SGD$15.00), one may choose from clear or creamy versions. Broth was thick enough but not overly so; palatable flavours with spiciness level toned down to match diners'  preference, but one could always request for extra spiciness.

For drinks - besides Chang Beer, we also tried the Thai Iced Milk Tea (SGD$3.00) and Iced Bael Fruit Tea (SGD$3.00) - the latter held an interesting floral sweetness, a little like our Chinese "Luohan Guo" herbal drink (siraitia grosvenorii).

We left Little Elephant Thai Bistro with happy bellies and happier smiles - thank you Alfred and team for hosting us, as well as the team at Phish Communications for the invite!

Remember to mark your calendars for Thai Sensory Trails happening between 31 August 2018 - 1 September 2018, so you can try all these tantalising Thai dishes for yourselves!

Review on Kose Sekkisei Herbal Gel

I have always loved Kose's Sekkisei herbal series of skincare, and would like to share with you the benefits and beauty of their Herbal Gel.

The simple yet elegant design of the tub - deep royal blue bottom, and a thick silver lid, gives it a very trustworthy yet beautiful appearance - as though it is telling you that "I mean business", as a facial cream.  Retailing at SGD$56.00 for an 80 grams tub, I would find the price to be very reasonable because it is an emulsion, a serum cream, a massage pack and sleeping mask all in one. In other words, one product is sufficient to fulfill all your skincare regime - and this can be used for daytime and nighttime.

Ingredients-wise, the Sekkisei Herbal Gel contains (among other ingredients) compounded oriental herbs such as coix seed, angelica, loquat extract, melothria heterophylla and mugwort. The texture of the gel is light, cool and easily-absorbed; it carries a gently herbal scent that I find very soothing and therapeutic.

That's me in Vancouver at -4 degree celsius, with supple skin thanks to the herbal gel.

If used during the daytime, a thin layer is enough to keep skin hydrated and supple throughout the day, even in air-conditioned environment or wintry weather (yes, I relied on this heavily during my Vancouver vacation in December).

If used at night as a sleeping mask, a thicker layer is to be applied. The skin feels soft, moistened and beautiful in the morning. I personally dub this my miracle gel, as I can also use it after my laser skin treatments, since it calms and soothes my skin.

Have you found your dream product yet? I think that with Kose's Sekkisei Herbal Gel, I have!

Lunch at Lam's Kitchen @ Balestier

460 Race Course Road, Singapore 218700
Tel: 6398 1154

Passed by Lam's Kitchen many times and have been treated to their takeout Salt Baked Chicken before, so decided to pop in for lunch.

Coffee-shop settings facing the main road along Balestier area, this eatery's signatures are Salt Baked Chicken and Abalone Noodle. Service is quite good as the guys manning the counter are always smiling.

We started with Fried Fish Skin (SGD$5.00) and Stir-Fried Vegetables (SGD$5.00), the latter providing balance to the meal.

Abalone Noodle (SGD$7.00) was springy tasty, filled with ingredients such as minced pork, pork balls, etc exactly like Bak Chor Mee (minced meat noodles). The skewer of pieces of Abalone was delicious but it was akin to eating Bak Chor Mee with additional stick of extra ingredient.

Salt-bake Chicken Thigh (SGD$6.80) with Rice was delicious; moistened and tender.

Overall, the dining experience at Lam's Kitchen was satisfying and we would be glad to come back.
